"Conference attendees returned to their workplaces armed with an understanding of the leadership strengths of women of color and with a wealth of bridge building strategies."
Dr. Jane E. Smith, Executive Director, Spelman College Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement

The Fourth Annual Leadership and Women of Color Conference will convene on May 8 - 10, 2007, at the Cobb Galleria Centre, Atlanta, GA. This year’s conference has been developed around the theme of "Building Bridges: Issues, Practices and Solutions." A diverse group of women and men will gather to build upon the knowledge, truths and revelations of last year's conference, "Building Bridges Among Us and With Others," which attracted hundreds of leaders to a substantive discussion of the issues related to inclusion, leadership and progress. We define bridge building as closing the gap between cultures and experiences by removing obstacles and reaching mutual understanding.

"Our Third Annual Women of Color Leadership Conference was a tremendous success – the best one yet!"
Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, President, Spelman College

The Conference, organized by the Spelman College Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement (LEADS), is a positive environment for stimulating dialogue as well as a professional development opportunity for individuals and organizational teams. This Conference also engages and challenges participants to impact the quality of leadership around the world, particularly as it pertains to Women of Color and the diverse groups with whom they work and live.

"Building Bridges: Issues, Practices and Solutions," will provide these leaders a substantive opportunity to:

  • examine and discuss the issues related to bridge building as a critical factor in the leadership development of Women of Color and others;
  • explore the dynamics, logistics and impact of effective bridge-building practices upon work performance and results; and
  • envision potential solutions to the challenges of bridge-building for Women of Color and others as leaders.
  • define Bridge Leader as an effective leadership model in diverse settings.

What is the Leadership and Women of Color Conference?
The Spelman College Leadership and Women of Color Conference brings together multi-generational Asian, Black, Latino, Native American and White leaders from private and public sectors to engage in authentic dialogue relative to women in the workplace and to exchange ideas and share best practices to promote multicultural leadership.

Why is it important to have and/or sponsor a multicultural leadership conference for women?
As women of color increasingly lead alongside men and white women in the workplace, it is critical to have a dedicated forum where multicultural women can engage in authentic dialogue and discuss leadership strategies to help build productive and prosperous work environments and where others can increase their understanding of the challenges these women face.
